Did you know: Randy Johnson going for win 300 #mlb

Posted in MLB on June 3, 2009 by frankfso

Great info from the MLB Gameday PressPass release:

RANDY JOHNSON will make his 1st attempt at earning his 300th career victory tonight as his next win will make him 1 of just 24 pitchers in major league history to reach 300-win milestone, feat which was last achieved by Tom Glavine in 2007.

Johnson would become just 6th left-handed pitcher to achieve mark and 5th hurler since 1970 to reach 300 career victories.

• Only 4 of 11 300-game winners over last 50 years (since 1959) won their 300th game on their 1st attempt (Warren Spahn, Steve Carlton, Gaylord Perry and Tom Seaver).

• According to Elias Sports Bureau, if Johnson wins tonight he will become 2nd-oldest pitcher to earn his 300th win at 45 years and 266 days old. Phil Niekro is the oldest at time of his 300th win at 46 years and 188 days old on Oct. 6, 1985, Gaylord Perry is currently 2nd on this list at 43 years and 233 days old when he won his 300th game on May 6, 1982 vs. New York-AL (as Mariner).

• Would become just 7th pitcher that has worn Giants uniform that is part of 300-win club, joining Christy Mathewson (1900-1916), Warren Spahn (1965), Tim Keefe (1885-89, 1891), Steve Carlton (1986), Gaylord Perry (1962-71) and Mickey Welch (1883-92). Would also be 4th pitcher that has accomplished feat as Giant (Keefe, Welch and Mathewson). Mathewson was last pitcher to win 300 games wearing Giants uniform when he did so for New York Giants in 1912.

• Has made 596 career starts and has tossed 4,091.1 innings…won his 1st major league game Sept. 15, 1988 vs. Pittsburgh while playing for Montreal.

• Did not win his 1st major league game until 5 days after his 25th birthday in 1988 and he had just 64 wins at time of his 30th birthday in 1993. While 5 members of 300-win club didn’t win game before turning 25 (Lefty Grove, Phil Niekro, Eddie Plank, Old Hoss Radbourn and Warren Spahn), only Niekro had fewer wins by age 30 (31) than Johnson. His 235 wins since turning 30 are 5th-most in major league history (Elias Sports Bureau).

• Has more wins in his 40s (71-50) than he did in his 20s (64-56).

• Has 3 20-win seasons (1997, 2001-02), but his 1st 20-win year, which came in 1997 with Seattle, came at age 33.

DID YOU KNOW?…Phil Niekro is only pitcher to hurl shutout for his 300th win, blanking Blue Jays 8-0 on Oct. 6, 1985, which was final day of regular season…
